Local Liberal Democrats hosted a well-attended meeting about the European Union and the forthcoming referendum with a thoughtful talk by Prof Helen Wallace highlighting the value of collaboration within the EU since its inception and Britain’s participation over the last half-century. She highlighted the single market which has greatly benefitted British business and freedom of movement which has enabled many British people to live, work or gain an education in other EU countries.
Prof Wallace also reminded people that the economic and political cooperation across the EU has, as the founders hoped, made a major war in Europe highly unlikely.
“I think that people have come to take for granted the benefits of being part of Europe” said Cllr Janet Battye. “My children were born since we joined and it’s just part of our everyday lives. I do worry that we don’t enjoy the positives and are not as proud of being part of Europe as other countries”
